Congratulations, and Good Luck
Hi Class:
Thank you all for make our class a success. Some of you were especially strong contributors, and made our class a dynamic and thought-provoking experience - a special thanks to Ofelia, Sydney, Terrence, Adam, Addison, Stefan, Peter, Erik, Elizabeth and Sivakorn.
We have decided to donate the leftover funds to the charity of "Team Foosball's" choice: The Children's Wish Foundation. I will arrange for this to occur this week.
I will also arrange to have your book added to the permanent collection at the library.
This blog will remain active indefinitely, should you feel the desire to come back and visit.
Good luck in your future endeavors, and keep in touch.

What the heck is going on?!!?
Alright, well I'm meeting up with Terry to get the booklets printed however, two problems lie here. First is the money, Terry or I haven't recieved any money to get these booklets paid for, Terry and I will be fronting the cash, however we will require the class to pay us back by today. Second is colour, Terry and I have agreed that the hard copy will be all color and the ones the class will get to take home will be black and white, if someone has a problem show us the money.
got them joe!
this is going to be god damn expensive as hell to print
and where is all of the cash
I could pay for it my self but all colour pages is going to be expensive
we'll work somethign out here
I am at school all day from 12

Introduction.
Okie, here we go...
On Wednesday April the 4th of 2007 the OCAD students joined in an activity at Butterfield Park. It was called "Avtivate the Park". The reasoning for this involved all first year design students who were apart of the interaction design class. Together with their classmates, they decided to create fun new ways for people to communicate. Our team chose to exhibit a booth where secrets would be shared with eachother. We decided to call it "The Secret Exchange". With everyone in the class coming up with great ideas, our final decision was based on a dark mysterious booth that you could walk into, type in your secret electronically and then someone else's secret would be revealed to you through a printing process. We brought in the old with the new. We, as a class wanted to have everyone to communicate with eachother, anonomously. With our great success, we'd like to share some of our secrets with you.
and then at the end of the book write.... Great thanks to our leaders Jesse Jackson and Fei; for their encouragement and support. Most of all a GREAT thanks to everyone in our class who took their time to help out and make our idea become successful.

Intro!
Hey guys, Siva helped me come up with a intro, maybe you guys can help me out and add something i might be missing. Thanks Ofelia :D
Breakdown
if we have 105 pages or so per book, and 25 books, thats, hold on, 2625 pages, lets say 2500 are black and white at 3cents (cheapest i could find)a page, thats 75 $, then 29 c per page for the 125 colour pages, thats about 36 bucks, so thats 111 bucks, then to bind them and get a cover on them it is 4 pers booklet at Alicos printing, so thats another hundred so it would be ---------211 bucks-----------, maybe more?!
I do not feel like manually binding them unless we each want to bind our own in what ever way we want to? Then its only $111. Peace out! Get me some feed back yall!

Money problems
Ok, so I've looked at the figures - and something's gone seriously wrong.
These are the reciept totals I've added up.
Ad team
budget: $50 + 80 (from construction team) = $130
23.37
17.61 = $63.48 (expense)
22.50
Construction team
Budget: $250 – 80 = $170
28.50
43.76 (paid by Syd)
18.15
11.35
29.02 = $169.95 (expense)
9.12
20.76
9.29
Tech team
budget: $80
?
total expense: $233.43 +
total change received: $75.58 = 309.01
total money collected: $380.00
**MONEY UNACCOUNTED FOR: $70.99
obviously this is a big problem. tech team, I still haven't gotten the breakdown of your expenses.
I'm thinking there was some money exchanges between groups that no one told me about.
Can anyone explain what happened here?
Thanks,
Amy

Instructions for Next Week
Two more weeks of class remain!
Next week (Thursday, April 12), you will resolve all Project Three loose ends.
You are expected to continue to work as a class to bring Project Three to a close, with limited guidance from your instructors. I'm not able to make it next week, but Fei will be there to assist you as necessary. You may choose to break up into new teams to complete the required tasks during the subsequent week. Consider the following.
1) Self-critique: Engage in a critical discussion about your project. Concentrate on the user experience you created, rather than the technical hurdles you faced. What worked for people? What didn't? What would you change for next time? Did you get any comments from users? Take notes on the chalkboard, and post a photo of these notes to the blog.
2) Prizes #1: All sections are responsible for selecting their favorite project, and submitting their selection to their instructor. The project that receives the most
votes will be awarded a prize from the Faculty of Design. Choose the project that you thought was the most interactive, engaging, meaningful, beautiful & fun, and let me know what you picked.
3) Prizes #2: All sections are also responsible for awarding special prizes of their own choosing. You may award as many as you like, and make them as creative as you like. Create your own categories (best dressed, best project for fighting the cold, best "secret" project, etc.), and choose your winners. Then, decide how to best deliver the award. Given the difficulty in actually presenting your prizes to the other classes, the east wall of 1420 has been set aside as a "prize wall." You may choose to create your prize in class, or you may select a team of students to make your prize - but make sure it's up on the wall (or otherwise delivered - on the web, for example) by Monday, April 16 at 9AM. Keep the prizes positive.
4) Recycling: Please ensure that all materials used in your project are appropriately recycled. Nothing should remain in 1420.
5) Money: are there funds left over? Are all expenses accounted for? You may redistribute any leftover funds, or you may choose to use these funds for prizes or other future expenses.
6) Documentation: devise a means by which everyone can get copies of all photos - maybe a group flickr account? Or do you want to make a website for the project?
7) The Book: I WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE BOOK MADE BY THURSDAY, APRIL 19. Make it happen!
This list is not exhaustive. There may be other issues that I haven't thought of. Once again, Fei is not going to walk you through this. You've done an amazing job of working as a class so far - please continue to do so. Remember, this is your last chance to pull your weight in Project Three if you haven't done so already.
I'll see you on April 19.

Project Two Marks and Course Marks To Date. . .
. . . have been uploaded to My Courses.
Please email me if you have any specific questions. In general, the final prototypes were deemed successful demonstrations of the nature of fun, though many of you lost marks for not completing all of the required deliverables, especially posts to the blog. The project evaluation was heavily weighted towards process - just as with a real design, pulling a project out of a hat simply didn't cut it.
The Course Marks To Date don't include updated Participation and Exercise marks, and they don't include Project Three. Your individual Project Three mark will depend to a large degree on your level of participation, so if you feel that your participation thus far hasn't been up to par, then next week will be your last chance to improve your performance. I am pleased to note that for most of you, Project Three will raise your final Course Mark.

Congratulations (from me)
It truly was wonderful. I especially appreciated the unique nature of your interaction - it was both personal and collective. Seeing someone else with a card reinforced this special duality, as you simultaneously knew and didn't know what the other person had.
I'm also very proud of how well you all came together as a class.
A special thanks to Syd for being our patient and fearless leader.
It's not quite over yet - we're going to spend next class on follow up activities. Details to follow.

Congratulations to everyone -- students, class assistants,
participants, staff, faculty --
for a fabulous Activation of Butterfield Park!!
We had a wonderful turnout from all 15 sections of 1st year PID, and a
great response from the community. There were also many local
neighbours and a number of visitors to Toronto who participated and
had a great time. The feedback was really positive. Here is a sampling
of the emails, below.
We also had the press out, with an article in the Post on Wednesday
with the 'Secret Exchange', and great previews on the TO blogs --
thanks to Shawn Micallef, and Sarah Mulholland.
Thanks also to everyone for ensuring that the getout and cleanup went
smoothly and quietly, without disruption to the Faculty of Art
lecture. Note that all materials must be out of room 187 by 4:00 on
Thursday.
with warm regards to you all, at the end of a chilly day,

The email below is such positive feedback. It is wonderful to see the
sense of community among the first year students in the park and to
hear their hooting and hollering. Please pass on my congratulations to
all involved in this innovative project.

I went over to Butterfield today with some of my staff. Absolutely
fabulous. The ideas were amazing. The creativity was infectious and the
fun level off the chart. I have been a landscape architect working on
public spaces for over 30 years. That is what a park is for. Well done
1st year OCADer's !!!!!!!!!!!!!! You should submit some pictures to the
Project for Public Spaces.

Hey guys
sorry I wasn't there to help out today. Turns out I had to drive my dad from the airport back home to Hamilton, and got caught in traffic on the way back. By the time I got to school I couldn't find anyone. Hopefully I'll be able to do something helpful tomorrow. Seems like you guys had fun, and the booth looks great. I'll bring a printer with me if one is needed... Syd, if you read this, I'll give you a call tomorrow morning about the index cards and printer and such.
Again sorry I couldn't help out guys.

Progress so far
So construction is going well.
We've had some set backs but the frame is built and were now attaching the curtain.
If anyone can make it we're going to be taking a photograph at 7:00pm (for the newspaper)
For tomorrow we are going to be meeting at 11:00 in room 187.

Poster Wars
There has been reports of posters being torn down. Do not tear anyone's posters down. I don't think this applies to you.
Also, OCAD will tear your posters down right away if they're in the wrong locations, so stick to the authorized notice boards.

Power Over The Door
Team Build et al:
Remember that you need to build a frame that goes over the door to room 187 to route power from the outlets to your project. Other classes have requested the use of this frame as well, so make it sturdy enough for multiple cords. Syd, I've directed them to contact you.

Some exciting news.
Hey everyone
A journalist from the National Post heard about our 'secret exchange' and is going to write an article on it.
pretty cool eh!
The only thing he asked for was a photo, which he need's by 8:00pm tuesday. So i thought either we could do a group photo or just take a picture of the (hopefully) finished Secret Booth.
Add any idea's you have
I will make a post tomorrow to let everyone know that, if we are going to do a group photo when it will be and where it will be.

Wednesday!
Hi Class:
I hope all is well.
As of today, I believe you have access to the Lambert Lounge should you need it.
Please let me know when you will be meeting on Wednesday morning, and I will meet you there. It looks like I won't be able to locate the electronic equipment until then, hopfully that's OK. I won't be able to help for the entire day, but I will be around. Fei will be arriving sometime after 2PM.
Good luck! Contact me right away by email if you have any immediate concerns.

Press Release
PRESS RELEASE
For Immediate Release:
April 2, 2007
Second Annual Activate the Park exhibition!
First Year OCAD Interaction Design students create 15 interactive public space projects to be displayed in Butterfield Park (under the OCAD "tabletop") on April 4, 3-6pm
Toronto ON: First year interaction design students at the Ontario College of Art and Design have been charged with the task of "Activating the Park" by creating projects that will engage students and the general public who pass by. Nestled underneath architect Will Alsop's now-famous "tabletop" building is Butterfield Park, a new and beautiful urban park, but one people don't linger in -- it's a space to pass through, not stop and reflect on the space or interact with others.
Each of 15 classes has created a different dynamic environment. All are on view from 3pm - 6pm on Wednesday April 4. It will be a festive and exciting scene. Projects include:
• The Tent -- exploring the interactive possibilities of layering environments within environments -- "Come take shelter"
• Das Ballon -- Step inside … an interactive inflatable
• Mega Maze -- Two People. One Maze. Mega Confusion.
• Pssst…Shhhh -- Pssst, what's your secret? Shhh, don't tell…or do. Come into a dark corner, trust your secrets to paper, and see what happens.
• See It, Say It, Spray It -- It's literature warfare. Pick from floating words, bicker over the ones cruelly take from you. When you're done with your message, spray it on a t-shirt for the world to see!
• Human Foosball -- Come and (try to) kick it around -- for charity
• DACO at OCAD -- Giant Everything!
Down Giant TipOvers
Articulate Giant Jenga Towers
Compete building Giant Forts
Oppose in Giant Tic-Tac-Toe
• Paradise Lost -- An interactive performance with tropical butterflies, ecological threats, tireless environmentalists and Al Gore.
• The Secret Exchange -- Wouldn't you like to know somebody's deepest secret? Here's your chance - but you must offer one in return.
• Ontario Cave of Art and Design -- primitive cave painting under the modern floating box
• Dirty Little Secret -- Air your secrets in public like dirty laundry
• And more…
The entire park is the canvas, and passersby are the subjects. With the recent interest Toronto's public spaces, these student projects represent what happens when young people look at our city's communal spaces and say "How can we engage people there?
Location: Butterfield Park, south end of OCAD building, 100 McCaul Street
What is interaction design?
Interaction design is a sub-discipline of design which examines the role of embedded behaviors and intelligence in physical and virtual spaces as well as the convergence of physical and digital products. Sometimes referred to by the acronyms "IxD" or "iD," interaction design has recently developed as a field of study in a growing number of universities throughout the world. Interactive Design is concerned with a user, customer, audience, or participant's experience with a designed object.

Sorry for the late update...
Sorry for the late update but build team, that means everyone, there's a meeting tomorrow to finalize everything and such. Meet at the library at 12:oo pm, so we can discuss the finalized look of the booth, materials and how to get them to OCAD. Tuesday is all day building and constructing so that we have it ready by Wednesday. Make sure everyone in the build team shows up, since most people were unavailable during the weekends.
Thanks.
Thanks.
Hooray
Ok, the secret system works.
You enter a secret, and then the system prints out a secret. The printed secret is random and secrets do not print more than once.
Sound Good?
